The insider’s guide to Newport, RI

There are moorings available to rent in Newport both from the City of Newport and from commercial operators. City of Newport moorings are on a first come first served basis and you can reach the Harbormaster on VHF channel 16. Some commercial mooring services allow you to make reservations in advance. Moorings are available both in the North end of the harbor closest to downtown and to the south in Brenton Cove.

There are also commercial moorings available to the west of Newport in Jamestown and there is a water shuttle service available between Jamestown and Newport.

Anchorages are available in the outer harbor west of Goat Island and in the inner harbor. Boats with drafts of more then 16 ft. typically anchor in the outer harbor where depths can reach 100 ft. or more. In the inner harbor the best anchorage is on the east side of the harbor just north of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, which is directly across from you as you enter the inner harbor between Ft. Adams to the south and Goat Island to the north. Please be sure to take note of the cable/no anchor buoys.
